NUO® began as a question: what is the minimum number of decisions needed to make a stool? The answer was one. A single U-shaped cut removed from the bottom of a flat plywood panel creates two legs, defines the silhouette, and gives the object its entire character.
From the front, NUO® almost disappears — two strips of birch eighteen millimetres wide, a void between them. From the side, the full panel reveals itself: the arc at the base, the grain running the full height, the nine ply layers exposed at every edge. The object changes completely depending on where you stand.
The seat board drops into a dado groove cut across each panel. Friction holds everything in place. Three pieces, zero hardware, no assembly tools required. It disassembles in seconds.
